Building on a long-standing relationship, CPR was selected to deliver the electrical and automation scope for Barrett Burston's new Kiln and storage facility.
Overview
To modernise production, we designed and installed a sophisticated electrical system including high-power VSDs, PLC automation, and a new switch room.
The project integrated seamlessly with the existing plant, ensuring continuous full-scale production.
Scope of Work
• Upgrade of electrical infrastructure and structured data cabling
• Installation of new PLCs for advanced process control
• Integration of 690V 600kW VSDs for main fan motors
• Installation of conveyors, sensors, and pneumatic controls
• Supply of a 35-pole slip ring and new Switchroom/Kiosks
• Power quality surveys and thermal imaging validation
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge
The kiln upgrade was executed during the COVID-19 pandemic, presenting unique resource availability, travel restriction and workplace safety challenges. Additionally, all works were conducted within a live malting plant environment where production continuity was essential, requiring strict safety protocols, hot work permits and careful coordination with plant operations staff to manage risk across the active facility.
Solution
CPR leveraged our third-party OHS accreditation (AS45001:2018) to manage safety rigorously throughout the pandemic-affected project. A 24-hour breakdown service and detailed cutover planning ensured the project momentum continued despite external disruptions. Our team implemented COVID-safe work practices, staggered crew schedules and maintained clear communication with Barrett Burston's management to deliver the kiln upgrade on schedule while protecting both our crew and the client's workforce.
Project Outcome
The upgrade was a resounding success, completed on time and within budget with Zero Lost Time Injuries (LTI). The new kiln operates with optimised energy efficiency and reliability.
